From Snow Days to Test Tracks
Because real-world conditions don’t wait for perfect weather. Ottawa puts smart mobility technologies through all four seasons, snow, ice, heat, and everything in between. And add to that something most places can’t: direct access to the regulators and policymakers who decide what gets approved, adopted, and deployed.
Overview
Street Smart
Ottawa’s approach to smart mobility is exactly that, built for the street. More than 100 companies and organizations are developing connected and autonomous technologies here. In fact, it’s where Canada first put autonomous vehicles into live traffic, not just closed courses. At Area X.O, companies test across a secure, purpose-built environment with private LTE/5G networks, V2X infrastructure, autonomous vehicle test tracks, drone corridors, and integrated cybersecurity validation.

Area X.O
Driving the future of smart mobility
Area X.O is the first integrated, end-to-end CAV test environment of its kind in North America. Located on an 1,850-acre private gated site, Area X.O allows innovators to bring tech closer to market faster, safely. Area X.O is equipped with one of the most advanced communications infrastructures in the world with 5G, integrated smart city and real-world urban and rural mobility infrastructure with a 16km test track and comprehensive networking and sensor infrastructure connected to a centralized command centre. In addition, Area X.O offers access to crash avoidance target equipment, an autonomous Lexus 450H, Aurrigo Low Speed Autonomous Shuttles and a 4G/5G-enabled mobile emergency command station.
